Prof Paul M Young | DIRECTOR of biodesign.sydney

Professor Paul M Young holds the inaugural Chair of Commercialisation in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. His focus is to translate basic and applied sciences into commercial innovations that have real world applications and to drive a culture change in entrepreneurship within the academic community. Paul is also a Professor of Respiratory Technology at the Woolcock of Institute of Medical Research and Director of a number of start-ups including Ab-inito Pharma Ltd and Oz-UK LTD

Prof Michael Wallach | CO-DIRECTOR

Professor Wallach has over 30 years of experience in molecular parasitology with a wealth of experience in both academic and industrial science. In 2008, Michael established a new course in Bio-Innovation and Entrepreneurship where graduates work in small teams to form creative innovative ideas for medical health products. In 2013, he was appointed as the inaugural director of the SPARK Sydney program, which was established by UTS and the University of Sydney and played a key role in building SPARK Global.

Sean has a total of 12 years nursing experience 6 of which at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital on the casual pool, giving him hands on experience on many ward’s and department’s within Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

DR MATTHEW OLDAKOWSKI & INTAN OLDAKOWSKA

Dr Matt Oldakowski & Intan Oldakowska are Perth Biodesign Course Directors and researchers at Curtin University. Matt and Intan are both biomedical engineers and entrepreneurs focused on developing medical devices. Their research spun-out REX Ortho, a company developing an expandable screw for orthopaedic surgery, with Matt as founder/CTO and Intan as founder/CSO. Intan is founder/CEO of Cervical ChinUp, which developed and markets a minimally-intrusive neck support device, with Matt being founder/CTO.  At Stanford University Matt trained as a Global Faculty Training Fellow at the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign as well as holding an Endeavour Executive Fellowship to connect the Australian and US medtech ecosystems. Matt also currently collaborates with Dr Paul Yock and Dr Peter Santa Maria at Stanford to develop EarBuddy, a non-invasive treatment for Otitis Media with Effusion. Matt and Intan, as the co-Directors of Biodesign Australia, are the nationwide program leads for Biodesign.
